Refuge
So far we have seen how a landscape can be generated by just two elements –
Obstacles and Portals, combining to create Realms.
And to be able to get a good overview of the surrounding area, we must instantly
recognise, and be attracted to Prospects…
But to be able to navigate this landscape another element is needed
for the quest to be safe and productive -
the Refuge.
and we need to be able to quickly recognise places of safety, Refuges where
we might hide, rest or shelter.
Natural… or man-made… Big… or small.

If it reaches over, or wraps around, it creates a sense of security.
Remove it, and the place suddenly looks bare:

and exposed…

Curved refuges are particularly cosy looking… Could there be a connection here between the
round shape for love, and the visual cue for a Refuge?
And, of course, humans did not invent this ability to recognise cosy spots:

we just inherited age old genes which had been doing this for perhaps a hundred million years.
Of course, we need to leave a gap, a Portal, to escape from the Refuge, or it becomes
a prison – an Obstacle. So pictures of gardens with the gate left invitingly open
are preferred over those with gates which are shut.

And Refuges with Secret interiors are also scary… They
could be some other creature’s refuge already:

check carefully first…
…because Refuges are Portals too, and what encircles to protect
can as easily encircle to trap or destroy. But often the warning is there…

and sometimes the warning can be taken as a challenge:

TSW
…every surfer’s dream.
